Lecture, 3 hours. Geometric and Physical Optics; topics include optical ray tracing, matrix treatment of ray optics, radiometry, wave theory of light, coherence, interference, matrix treatment of polarization, polarized materials, thin film interference and diffraction.

Prerequisite: PHYS 314 or 325.

Physics 300 Physics of Music (Updated 5/11/08 Note: Lecture updates chap 23 auditorium acoustics reverberation time calculations, HW date changes and problem solutions)

Lecture, 3 hours. Introduction to physical principles encountered in the study of music; applicable laws of mechanics and acoustics, harmonic analysis; musical scales; sound production in musical instruments; elements of electronic music. Satisfies GE, category B3. Prerequisite: one course in physical science or consent of instructor.
